Why hello there, Lambdawank! I believe you shall be extremely useful during my Yaoicon panel. After I'm done headdesking, anyway.
Basic rundown: Lambda Literary Awards clarifies rules to make it clear that it's an award for books about and by LGBT people. Cue lots of straight slash writers flailing all over the place.
Linkspam picked it up here.
I'm thinking of going through and picking out choice bits for my panel "What's a Nice Lesbian Like You Doing in a Fandom Like This". Any suggestions from the peanut gallery? |

I glanced at Luminosity ( sockkpuppett)'s post from the other day (screencap here).
Now, ms_treesap has a great post about it, and the_wanlorn similarly is awesome about pointing out the ridiculous assumptions contained within the post.
I'd like to make one more, rather less ragey note about the ridiculousness of Luminosity's failure to understand fandom:
I'm going to say that I don't really understand it.
I mean, that's not to say I haven't done my fair share of bitching about fandom and how I hate the direction it's going, but I usually also turn around and find something else to do in fandom. I got to the point where I hated Wincest? amchara founded spn_summerlove, and I had a source for fic about the women on SPN. When I get tired of the racism and sexism meta I go looking for porn. And honestly, regardless of how much racism and sexism meta there is, it's not hard to find. When I do my relatively rare meta-ing, I write about what interests me. Maybe I'm not as pressured because my many fandom friends are scattered over multiple fandoms, so I don't worry about the crushing weight of fandom dislike (and also, I enjoy meta-ing about race and gender), but if I feel like meta-ing about Hardison's awful accent in The Ice Man Job, I don't think anyone's going to yell at me for disrespecting him for being Black. And if I meta about the fact it does seem like Leverage sidelines the character and that might be because he's Black-- that also is okay. People might disagree, people might agree, people might very well fucking ignore it, but I do it because the topic is there and it's something I want to talk about, not because this is work for me. And you know what? If people ignore it, they're free to.
And therein lies the reason the post rubbed me wrong-- Wanlorn and Tree are totally correct in pointing out how utterly privileged Luminosity was being, but even those of who do try and keep up with the *fails get tired after a while. Shocking, I know, but it burns a person out. But this is fucking fandom. When you get tired, there are other places for you to go and recharge-- I can think of several communities created by FoC for FoC so they could be fannish and recharge and just have fun. I can think of plenty of non-political fic and meta communities that anyone can join and recharge.
Not only was she being privileged in that she refused to understand why so many people have gotten politicized (and, yes, Luminosity, fandom used to be political just by being-- we've grown out of that and now we have to work at keeping our subversive cred, sorry), but she was being privileged by dismissing out of hand the idea that this stuff tires EVERYONE out. And that's why only part of fandom is extremely vocal about it. No one's going to begrudge you ignoring some of it and recharging your batteries. We will begrudge you acting like we're trying to make life hard for you.
Go find a fucking fic community and don't act like a goddamn martyr. |

The Spanner/Shoichi fic I've found is all mopey and angsty. This doesn't really seem to jive with the Spanner/Shoichi dynamic from the episodes where they interact.
I want something with fluff, where they build stuff together until Shouichi has to run off and get jerked around by Byakuran for a while, but where Shouichi looks forward to spending that little bit of time with Spanner. Dammit, I'm out of practice finding what I want in fandom, apparently.
I may have given up trying to find fic with my primary pairing, too. Fuck you, fandom. Also, fuck you for the random numbering scheme for pairings. If you didn't want to do smush-names, couldn't you at least have picked a scheme that made some damn sense?
For those of you not in the know, the fandom is Katekyou Hitman REBORN!, which may be one of the crackier shounen shows out right now. I'm talking, like, a Mafia hitman who's five years old, sort of cracky. |

You know, I think it says something about my current tastes that, despite being pretty into Supernatural fandom, I was going through my del.icio.us account and realized I have no pairing tag for Sam/Dean. That's not to say I don't have Sam/Dean stuff bookmarked, but it's all from before I got my account a little under a year ago-- when I imported all of my Firefox bookmarks into del.icio.us. I haven't bookmarked any Wincest since. Hmm.
(For the curious, up until now, my SPN pairing tags were: Bill/Ellen, Dean/Impala, Dean/Cassie, Jo/Ruby, John/Ellen, Sam/Bela, Sam/Jo, and Sarah/Cassie. My tastes? They are obvious.)
I'm doing some reorganizing of the imported bookmarks now... yes, eight months after I got the account. I am lazy.
Also? Happy Mother's Day. |

A little less than a month ago hannahrorlove posted an essay about slash goggles and why people should "just watch the show".
Now, I disagree. She knows I disagree, which is why I never bothered to write up a response essay, despite the fact that the concept of reading a text from the "wrong" point of view, and the existence that "what a show objectively is" goes against all my deconstructionist philosophies.
But, thankfully, I don't have to! Dr Merlin has posted a lovely essay that addresses most of my concerns about the idea of watching televison through filters-- albeit, in a more entertaining and less pretentious manner than I've been thinking about it. Please read her essay, Your Friends Are Not Watching the Same Show As You Are, And That's Okay.
Personally? Right now, I'm watching "The Donna Noble and Martha Jones Make Fun of Ten Show", "No, Seriously, Did You Learn Your Gender Studies in the Boys' Lockeroom? Show", "The Takezo Kensei/Adam Munroe/Richard Sanders/Jesus This Man Has Too Many Names Stalks Hiro Show", and "The Meat and Sarcasm Guy Hour". |

Sweet Charity, the bi-annual Fandom Charity Auction, is doing a special auction for the Writer's Guild Foundation-- a group helping out writers and below-the-line workers who ave been harmed by the continuing strike.
The auction just opened and there are a lot of awesome goodies up for sale-- custom made vids, fics written just for you, clothing and jewelry of all types and even some tasty foodstuffs! And right now it's all cheap. :D
I'm offering up two fics in any fandom you know I can write (I posted the most common ones at Sweet Charity, but if you want something you know I watch, talk to me and we can work something out), and baked goods-- either two dozen cookies or two dense chocolate cake loafs of the sort I do superbly well. |

Apropos of pretty much nothing, the idea of Tommy/Eli/Kate dub-con squicks me the fuck out when Kate's the one who's being dubious.
Also, it seems a little OOC to me. Eli's far too good of a guy to do that. Tommy, maybe, but not Eli.

I'm a little surprised I can't find a definition for "fandom lesbian", "internet lesbian", or "livejournal lesbian" on Urban Dictionary. That's irritating, because I want to talk about the terms and how much I hate them. Without a solid definition, it's a little difficult.
O, Flist! Can you guys dig something up?
Or at least, tell me what you think the terms mean? |

RE: The Yuletide thing
Huh. I haven't looked at the F_W post, mostly due to lack of time. But seriously, looking at mamadeb's post-- it's not that ridiculously unreasonable. (I think it might have been maygra who said that she thought the post was stupid? just_katarin you were there for the Sunday afternoon discussion... Whoever it was, I think I have to disagree with you. It doesn't seem to me like a particularly idiotic thing to say after reading the actual post.)
I don't pay attention so I didn't realize that the nominations were during Yom Kippur and Sukkot. That COMBINED with the the timing of opening up registration led to what looked, to me, like a somewhat self-deprecating commentary on the obliviousness of the Yuletide creators.
The speed with which it grew into something ridiculous is making me beat my head against a wall. As Katarin and Technosage have said-- fandom is slowly learning that when it does something racist the correct response is simply to apologize politely for wrongs done, ask how it can do better next time and move on. Given that Jews are a similarly oppressed minority (please see tiferet's post on why Pagans, Athiests, and Christians quite simply don't understand the problems of being a Jew in this society), it would have been a spectacularly good idea for people to simply say-- as we're learning to do when a FoC mentions skanky race issues-- "huh, I didn't notice that, we'll try to keep that in mind next year."
Far be it from fandom to ever do something intelligent, though.
(Someone on Ataniell's post noted how amusing it is for people to say Yuletide is secular and then get up in arms over the idea of changing the date that the fics go live-- December 24th.)
If you have no idea what's going on, chopchica has compiled links and posted some astounding responses over on her journal. You can also check the Fandom_wank post here although there's some places in there where I'm very glad I was away all weekend or a probably would have gone all wankitywank.. |

| Miscegenation is not the term for your kink. And if it is, then your kink is NOT OKAY. |
[Jul. 31st, 2007|01:48 pm] |
Sheer and utter FAIL, Harry Potter fandom.
What bothers me even more is that a number of people apparently didn't know the term "miscegenation" and thus the daily_deviant mods could define the term in a stupid and really fucking offensive way, and otherwise well-meaning people ended up thinking that was the actual meaning and that it was OKAY.
FAIL. Epic fucking fail, people.
You even got me distracted enough that I didn't post the book quotes I had all ready and everything!
... Strangely, I pulled a book titled The Interracial Dating Guide For Black Women Who Want to Date White Men off a book cart today. The author uses the pseudonym "Adam White" (COUGH). Maybe I'll do some quotes from it tomorrow, instead of the book I was planning-- that is, if I don't want to burn the book/author. |

I'm slightly more interested in the fact that Persona 3 for the PS2 is coming out on the 24th than the HP book is coming out on the 21st.
Possibly this is has to do with the fact that I have seen the first 400 pages already. (Not that I've read them all yet-- I've only read the first chapter and the epilogue...)
Next post will be about the party, I swear to god.
Edit: In other HP news, Ron and Hermione apparently snog in the next movie. I'm sure this will please my mother, who was most displeased with the lack of R/Hr smoochies in OotP. |

THE RULES:
1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favorite lyric to your current favorite song. Or your favorite kind of sandwich. Something random. Whatever you like.
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you in turn ask them five questions.
