Miscegenation is not the term for your kink. And if it is, then your kink is NOT OKAY.
Sheer and utter FAIL, Harry Potter fandom.

What bothers me even more is that a number of people apparently didn't know the term "miscegenation" and thus the [info]daily_deviant mods could define the term in a stupid and really fucking offensive way, and otherwise well-meaning people ended up thinking that was the actual meaning and that it was OKAY.

FAIL. Epic fucking fail, people.

You even got me distracted enough that I didn't post the book quotes I had all ready and everything!

... Strangely, I pulled a book titled The Interracial Dating Guide For Black Women Who Want to Date White Men off a book cart today. The author uses the pseudonym "Adam White" (COUGH). Maybe I'll do some quotes from it tomorrow, instead of the book I was planning-- that is, if I don't want to burn the book/author.

How curious.

Had they used "miscegenation" to refer, in the fandom, to Wizardling / Muggle sex, I'd say there was an argument.

To use it as a blanket term for not only interracial but interspecies sex... does not quite seem correct in the definition they had.

On the other hand, I'm far from as offended as these individuals -- but, hey, I'm a white male. I'm clueless by default.

If Lucius Malfoy says, "Draco, I forbid you to marry that Mudblood Granger girl, it's miscegenation", it would be a correct usage of the term. It doesn't just mean "to initiate interracial breeding/sex" but that doing so represents a defilement, that to have sex with this other person of a different race is polluting one's own body, dignity, and bloodlines.

The anger comes not from the initial use of the word, which was assumed to have been chosen without a clear understanding of the definition, but instead the absolute refusal to change it to a word that is synonymous, but without the racist connotations. "Well, we don't think it's racist, so we don't have to change it" is not an acceptable argument. Neither is "We picked it from random and so it HAS to stay or else the world will come to an end." It's not just stubborn and bull-headed, it's rude.

And conflating it with Aberforth/Goat-- interracial sex =/= interspecies sex, JESUS GOD.

Pain and suffering upon humanity.

And actually, I can see writing it, from that particular standpoint, as being an interesting kink all its own. "Oh, I shouldn't be doing this, it's so degrading" -- no different than any other fetish of that nature.

Oh sure. From that point of view. It's kind of a weird kink, and still one that might be insulting, but the way they originally had it worded was... beyond idiotic.

Yeah. I'm not as offended as some of the people on my friends list, but it's just so... clueless. I mean, it definitely would have made me somewhat uncomfortable if I'd been a member of the community, but I might have shined it on and just said "it's stupid, but maybe if I ignore it, it'll go away." (Conflating interspecies and interracial sex is offensive in the extreme, but I tend to ignore most of my LJ comms as a general rule.)

It's the way the mods reacted to someone politely pointing out that the term was offensive and their definition of it moreso that makes me want to invent a way to reach through the intertubes and slap someone.

I'm not even offended because I'm bi-racial, I'm offended because I love English and history!!!

Waaah! I hate humans!

I totally understand. I want to disown most of humanity a lot of the time.

It's like, a quick Wikipedia check would have told them how offensive the term was. They couldn't have just said "Oh hey, sorry about that" and posted something on the prompt page about the fact that it was racist but it's too late to change it now, so, yanno, sorry?

Just wait until I post excerpts of this book. It has chapter titles like "Reprogramming Yourself From Interracial Dating"!

I'm the half Japanese, half Mexican girl who's in the corner lighting a candle for these people.

And just when [info]biggrstaffbunch was starting to lure me back to that fandom with her HP stories of utter win. Bah.

Come join me! I have lemon meringue pie and liquor. They help dull the pain.

And the saddest part is that there was some really hot porn written for that idiotic prompt. And I want to read the Neville/Parvati porn, but I can't, because the stupid is like a giant brick wall.

On the other hand, there was one author who posted Dean/Luna porn and before the wank started pulled the "miscegenation" tag off. So I feel no shame telling you to read it.</i>

Crazy... not so much. It's more "stupid and racist" than anything else. Although the fact that the mods never thought beforehand "hey, conflating interracial and interspecies sex might offend some people" makes me think they were drinking the special Tang.

To be honest, I had never seen that word before I read the fandom wank about it. It's not exactly a word they teach in Danish schools - not because we don't have problems with racism, but because our problems are different (the intermarrying didn't happen because, well, Denmark was mainly populated by Danes and we didn't have enough immigrants for a term like that to ever be used).

That said, it doesn't take more than a few seconds to look it up on Webster, so even if the mods are not native English speakers (I don't know the d_d or the mods), there's no excuse. *sadface*

I can understand why someone who's not American might not know the word-- hell, I know Americans who didn't know the word. But the definition they used was ridiculous (guy fucking centaur =/= Draco fucking Blaise).

And beyond that, when someone emailed them politely to ask them to change it, the response should certainly not have been to ridicule her.

They've posted an apology now, but it's got the feeling of "backpedal harder, BITCHES."
